I accompanied the elephant ecologist and we were cruising around the bush when we saw this big guy. We stopped to admire his giant size. Then he started to come over THIS close! I had my long lens on at the time and was sitting in the back of the car I had to lean all the way back

This painting was inspired by that encounter – I actually painted it 5 times

and I was excited to see coyotes that were not skittish (like the ones near my house in Ventura)

But this also shows peace and coexistence in a sometimes-chaotic world

She walked past us as if we weren’t there – incredible for apex predators to be so relaxed around us
